The Strokes Gained feature provides a more advanced way to analyze golf performance by comparing a player's results to a selected reference. This FAQ explains what the feature is, how it works, and how to use it effectively in the TAG Heuer Golf app.
1- What is Strokes Gained?
Strokes Gained is an advanced statistic used to measure a golfer’s performance more precisely than a simple score.
Instead of only looking at the total number of shots played, Strokes Gained shows how many shots a player gained or lost compared to a reference, such as a professional golfer or a selected handicap level.
2- What is Strokes Gained used for?
Strokes Gained helps players better understand their game by identifying the areas where they perform well and the areas where they can improve.
- Identify strengths;
- Highlight areas for improvement;
- Track progress over time;
- Compare performance to a selected reference.
3- How to use the feature?
To activate and use the feature, the following elements are required:
- Enable Strokes Gained from the main tab of the TAG Heuer mobile application.
- Select the period: all rounds, last 5 rounds, last 20 rounds, or this year.
- Select the playing reference for comparison, such as different handicap levels (for example: 20 HCP) or a player reference such as Tommy Fleetwood.
For best results:
- Enable the automatic score calculation feature, which records all shots.
- Manually add penalties and assign them to the correct shot during or after the round.
- Edit, delete, or add shots from your mobile device after the round.
Important
For the most accurate Strokes Gained analysis, make sure your round data is complete and correctly updated after each game.
4- How is Strokes Gained calculated?
After each round, the data from every shot is analyzed, including position, distance, lie type, playing area, and other relevant information.
This data is then compared to a reference database to determine whether the player gained or lost strokes in each phase of the game.
For example, if a player performs better than the selected reference on a given shot, they gain strokes. If the performance is below the reference, they lose strokes.
5- What are the different Strokes Gained categories?
Strokes Gained is generally divided into several categories to analyze each area of the game:
- Strokes Gained Total: overall performance across the entire course;
- Strokes Gained Driving: performance from the tee;
- Strokes Gained Approach: performance on approach shots;
- Strokes Gained Short Game: performance around the green;
- Strokes Gained Putting: performance on the green.
This breakdown helps players quickly see which area of their game is gaining or losing the most strokes.
6- What does a positive or negative Strokes Gained mean?
A positive Strokes Gained value means the player performed better than the selected reference.
A negative Strokes Gained value means the player performed below the selected reference.
For example:
- +2 means the player gained 2 strokes compared to the reference;
- -5 means the player lost 5 strokes compared to the reference.
7- Why can my Strokes Gained be negative?
A negative score does not necessarily mean the round was bad. It simply means the performance was below the selected reference.
For example, if the comparison is made against a professional golfer, it is normal for an amateur player to often have a negative Strokes Gained result.
8- Is it more useful than total score?
Total score remains important, but Strokes Gained goes further by showing where strokes were gained or lost.
Two players may finish with the same final score while having very different strengths and weaknesses. Strokes Gained helps explain those differences in more detail.
9- How can I use this data to improve?
Strokes Gained helps players focus their practice on the areas that have the greatest impact on their score.
For example:
- If a player loses many strokes in putting, they can prioritize putting practice;
- If a player performs well in driving but struggles in the short game, they know where to focus their efforts.
The goal is to train in a more targeted and effective way.
10- Where does the data displayed in the app come from?
The data is collected during the round and then analyzed using a statistical reference database provided by TaylorMade.
Use of this feature is optional. You may choose not to use it, in which case none of your data will be shared with TaylorMade and you will not benefit from the score comparison offered by Strokes Gained.
If you choose to activate the feature by providing your express consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time from the application settings. Doing so will stop any further data sharing with TaylorMade.
Once the feature is activated, the results are displayed in the application so the player can review both overall and detailed performance.
